Why do women crave chocolate on their period?

It's a scientific fact: when women crave chocolate, it's usually because they're on their period. In fact, studies have shown that up to 85% of women experience some form of food craving during their menstrual cycle. And while there are all sorts of different foods that women crave, from salty snacks to comfort foods, chocolate is by far the most popular craving.
So why do women crave chocolate when they're on their period? There are a few different theories.

1. It's all about the hormones.
During your menstrual cycle, your body goes through a lot of hormonal changes. Estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate, which can cause all sorts of changes in your mood and appetite. Some experts believe that these hormonal changes are what lead to chocolate cravings.

2. It's a comfort food.
For many women, chocolate is a comfort food. It's soothing, satisfying, and can make you feel better when you're feeling down. So it's not surprising that women crave it when they're experiencing the hormonal ups and downs of their period.

3. Chocolate has mood-boosting properties.
Chocolate contains a chemical called phenethylamine, which is known to boost mood. So when you're feeling crummy during your period, eating chocolate can actually make you feel better.

4. Chocolate is a source of magnesium.
During your period, you lose a lot of magnesium through your urine. This can lead to feelings of fatigue and irritability. And since chocolate is a good source of magnesium, eating it can help replenish your stores and make you feel better.

5. Chocolate cravings are just a myth.
Some experts believe that chocolate cravings during your period are nothing more than a myth. They say that women are more likely to crave chocolate at other times of the month, such as when they're PMS-ing. So if you're craving chocolate, it's probably not because you're on your period.

No matter what the reason is, there's no denying that chocolate cravings are real. So if you're feeling the urge to eat chocolate, go ahead and indulge. Your body is probably just trying to tell you something.
