Why immune system go haywire?

A weakened immune system cant fight off infections and other diseases as well as a healthy one can. When your immune system is working properly, it produces proteins called antibodies. These antibodies attach to viruses and bacteria and help destroy them. But if your immune system is not working properly, it may not be able to make enough antibodies or it may make the wrong kind of antibodies. This can leave you more vulnerable to infections.

There are a number of reasons why your immune system might not be working properly. One reason is that you might have a genetic condition that affects your immune system. Examples of these conditions are severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED). Another reason why your immune system might not be working properly is that you might have a viral infection, such as HIV or hepatitis C. These viruses can damage your immune system. Certain medications can also weaken your immune system. These include steroids, cancer chemotherapy, and medications given after organ transplantation. You might also have a weakened immune system if you’re under a lot of stress. Stress can cause your body to release hormones that can suppress your immune system. If you have a weakened immune system, you may be more likely to develop infections, such as: • Bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and sepsis • Fungal infections, such as candidiasis • Parasitic infections, such as malaria • Viral infections, such as herpes, influenza, and HIV You may also be more likely to develop autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Type 1 diabetes.
